About

Why did you start The Velvet Bow?

I started The Velvet Bow predominantly as a creative outlet, an escape from the rigours of work and uni. I am hoping it will act as a kind of online portfolio of my writing and style for when I finish uni and start applying for jobs at magazines - my ultimate goal.

I also love to showcase my shopping finds and take styled photoshoots around Perth, we have so many beautiful places nearby that are just begging to have their picture taken!

I think blogs have the power to change the way we view the fashion industry, and I am really interested in being a part of the changing media landscape as the world of news and reporting migrates to online territories.

I hope everyone enjoys reading The Velvet Bow just as much as I enjoy writing it! A place to escape to full of whimsy and prettiness.

What kind of camera do you use?

I have a Canon 550D and I usually use a 50mm f/1.8 lens.

The majority of my photos on here are taken with my camera; either by my partner or friends if they are of me, or otherwise I take them. Any pictures from external sources will be credited with a clickable link to their original source.

What do you besides blogging?

I am a full time uni student and I also work at an insurance company part time to support my shopping habit! I have been singing for most of my life, though that’s taken a bit of a back seat lately. I also take lindy hop lessons (a form of old school swing dancing) and go out social swing dancing regularly. Otherwise I love cooking vegetarian food, writing, reading, going to the cinema and playing with my cats.

What do you study at university?

I’m currently studying Journalism at Curtin University. I’m specialising in print in particular, but I have also done units in public relations, fashion, and internet studies, as well as radio and TV news.

Where do you get most of your clothes?

My wardrobe is predominantly vintage, with items sourced from thrift stores, and eBay. I go thrifting quite often and visit stores in the outer suburbs of Perth to get the best buys. I also regularly go to local vintage markets and scour online stores for special items.

Perth has pretty limited shopping so I get a lot of stuff online from sites like Topshop, Asos, Urban Outfitters and smaller stores. Locally, I like Sportsgirl, Pigeonhole, Urban Depot, Cue, Dotti, Gorman and General Pants.

Feel free to contact me at jessie@thevelvetbow.com if you have any other questions :)

I am available for freelance writing work and articles. To see an example of an article I have written click here.

In May 2011 I spoke at the Curtin PR In Fashion night about the power of blogging and I am really interested in the effect of bloggers on both the media and fashion landscapes.

I also have organised several vintage and secondhand clothes sales and sold at others, let me know if you are having an event as I love attending or having a stall.

The Velvet Bow is a pastiche of fashion, lifestyle, photography, whimsy and vintage charm infused with musings, manifestos and a hint of glitter.

Jessie is a Perth-residing journalism student with an obsession for stringing words together to form perfect sentences, rummaging through thrift stores and travelling to far away places (some real, some imagined).
